SEPTEMBER O9
Gilly's doing great! No one in the family likes any new name I suggest, so I'm thinking he'll keep Gilly. He's starting to know come except if he gets too distracted. We have him running in our open field now, without leash, and around the yard. We're discovering the games he likes to play. He is a really smart guy, really. He notices so much of what's gong on around him. He follows the chipmunks, squirrels, and birds when he sees them. He followed the turkey he came upon all the way to the tree he landed in. I've signed him up for adult dog classes because he's so big and full of energy! The trainer, Mickey Mueller, can't wait to see and play with him. I asked about doggie daycare and she wasn't sure how the little dogs would get along with him. He's just such a big goof ball, Mr. Personality Plus. He loves to come in the shower with me & drink the water coming down. So, as I was watering everything this weekend with the hose, of course, he had to drink from that. He loved it, thought it was a great game and lots of fun. He does have to rest after all that fun, though, and then he just wants to lay in your lap or on top of you, where ever we are. He and Jim are good buddies. They go around the yard together, look at & smell Jim's practice vehicle
(NOTE, JIM IS A LARGE ANIMAL VETERINARIAN AND THIS IS THE VEHICLE HE USES TO MAKE FARM CALLS), and just hang out. With me, he's just my big boy. Our daughter came home for the weekend and taught him how to give little kisses after she gave him one. I couldn't believe it, but he did little licks, instead of big sloppers. He also had a fun game of peek-a-boo with her between our bedrooms. He thinks he can hide and no one will notice him hiding behind a shoe or something. I can't imagine having anyone else besides him now. He will grow into a fine big Dane.
September 09 Gilbert and his new family.
I wanted to touch base with you today to let you know that
Gilbert had a great ride home, a great evening, and a great
night with us. What a boy!! He's got quite a personality, we
are finding. He's getting along fine with our Golden Retreiver,
Ed, and with the other Dane, Jenkins, and the little poodle.
They have all found where they belong and what they can do
with each other, and how far they can go. We took him on 2
short walks after we got home and he did well, walking &
sniffing. He's a strong boy, but he listens pretty good. I can
tell that he needs quite a bit of work, but he seems to pick up
stuff pretty quick. He did swipe a piece of bread off of Jim's
plate when I set it down for him for dinner. When I said no, he
walked right away. We got to Fleet Farm just in time to pick up his crate & I'm glad we did. He does give him a sense of
comfort away from the other guys and he did well in there
over night. He will work out just fine, I'm sure, and we are
both so happy with him right now. He is a real sweetie!! We
are down at LaCrosse this afternoon because we needed to
get some things to our daughter and she got to meet him, too.
She likes him as well. Our son and daughter-in-law can't
wait to meet him.
