Thought you would enjoy a little Beau update. We have had him for a little over 3 weeks. He has totally settled in! He is the easiest dog we have had. Well, except for the drool! We have Beau towels around the whole house. At least the amount of drool has decreased as he has gotten more comfortable here. He drools when nervous, so the first few days my cloths were gross! Now it usually only when he east, drinks or runs around!
You remember that he used to be timid around men, but that has gone away. The girls are home from college and there is a steady stream of young adults coming thru the house all day. He has learned that, if nice, they will give him treats! So, his tail doesn’t tuck under him any more if someone comes up to him. And believe me, when walking our herd, lots of people come up!
His day usually goes like this…
Early breakfast (he is the only one not on a diet! The ridgebacks got fat!), 2 hours at the dog park or 2 hour walk, nap outside, afternoon walk, late lunch, wrestle outside with the 2 year old RR, collapse for an hour, play with Mom and Dad in the evening (those little puppy bursts that are so cute), another walk and finally bed! His naps are constantly interrupted, as he has to be within 10 feet of me Missy (our nanny) or Scott. He just gets settled in and I change what I am doing, so he has to follow me!
He has started training at Total Recall. Wherever he came from, he did have some training. He sits, shakes, lies down, asks to go outside, walks on a leash without pulling and goes right into his crate. He is not at all food aggressive, even with 3 other dogs in the house. It only took him 2 days to realize where his food bowl goes. He has learned his name and comes when called. Giving him a treat is hilarious. My whole hand disappears into his HUGE mouth, but he just sucks the treat away. When I come home from wherever, he likes to put my whole forearm in his mouth. It is like he is saying “you’re finally home”. We are trying to break him of this, but I swear it breaks his heart if he gets scolded (unlike the ridgebacks who are super stubborn). It only took one “WRONG!” for him to learn to leave the cat, but it broke my heart, because he looked soooo sad for 20 minutes.
Finally, as you know, the girls renamed him Beau (means handsome or loved one). As you can imagine, when walking them, we generate a fair amount of attention. First, people ask if all the dogs are mine. Then they comment on how well behaved they are. They say that Beau is such a handsome dog! It is a universal compliment. So, his name fits.
We love him so much. He will have a very happy and (hopefully) long life with us!
Thanks for doing all you do to help these guys! We are the lucky ones!
